Weightlessness & Weight

Digital Print Installation

2009

Weightlessness & Weight is a triptych of digital prints concerned with culture, exile, diasporic life/identity, and displacement. It is the first comprehensive work from AlSaraf’s project Rihla (ongoing since 2008), which represents the complex and difficult lived history (past/present) of an exilic and nomadic life. Weightlessness & Weight questions the ideas of home and belonging as well as one’s ability to forget and remember. It is about the contrast between the weight of accumulated memories and the lightness that comes out of each new step forward. The work explores what needs to be learned and reflected on by as well as rejected or integrated into a hybrid being, and expresses the challenges faced by that being, whose identity is multi-layered and continuously developing in respect to his/her movement.
